We assume that the output of a typical well in Glenwood Springs would be less than the 1,500 Btu/hr/ft. Based on work in Klamath Falls, we would expect a DHE to supply 15 to 25 gpm with a 10 to 20oF temperature change (ΔT) between the flows in the two legs. Using 20 gpm and 15oF ΔT, this would produce 150,000 Btu/h, and at 25 gpm and 20oF ΔT would produce 250,000 Btu/hr. The lower value could supply the heating demand of a 3,750 ft2 three-storied building, 5,000 ft2 of a two-stored building, or about four average sized homes, and the higher value, 6,250 ft2, 8,300 ft2, and 7 average homes respectively. It is possible that the 250,000 Btu/h could be produced using two loops in the well; however, not knowing the actual output of a DHE using the 120oF geothermal well water, a test would have to be performed using 2- and 3-inch diameter pipe. The cost of drilling a well to 600 feet and installing a 400-foot DHE loop and circulation pump would be approximately $82,500 ($75,000 for the well, and $7,500 for the equipment and installation). Also, assuming that the output from the well would be close to 150,000 Btu/hr, the annual heating load that could be supplied (assuming a load factor of 0.25) would be 330 million Btu/yr.
