Assuming an insulated pipe is placed under the river bed, and that only about 2oF is lost in the crossing, availability of the following energy supply appears possible. From the water flowing directly out of the Yampah Springs cistern, assuming a 25oF ΔT, 7.5 million Btu/hr would be available. This is enough energy to heat approximately 188,000 ft2 of three-storied buildings, or 250,000 ft2 of two-storied buildings in the downtown area – or about 1.5 city blocks. On an annual basis this would amount to about 16 billion Btu (assuming a load factor of 0.25), $15,000/yr in O&M costs (including electricity cost for the circulation pumps), saving an estimated net amount $117,000 in heating costs as compared to natural gas. The second source, the pool waste water, could be piped across the river to the Confluence Triangle where 1) a mixed-use development is being planned, and 2) snow is stock piled in the winter. The waste water could be used to heat the convention center and/or melt snow as follows: assuming a 10oF ΔT, the energy could first be used for radiant floor heating, a peak of 10 million Btu/h could be available, heating approximately 300,000 ft2 of multistoried floor space and the waste from this could be used to melt the snow stockpiled in the winter. The annual use would be around 22 billion Btu, $15,000/yr in O&M cost, for a net savings of $160,000 as compared to natural gas. The snow melt would be an additional bonus to reduce the storage space for the winter stockpile. In both cases, the estimated length of the pipeline would be around 800 feet.
