required, in both cases to keep the flow around 5 ft/s. Preinsulated steel pipe would cost around $30/ft for 7-inch diameter pipe and $100/ft for 12-inch diameter pipe. This would result in $24,000 for the small pipe and $80,000 for the large diameter. With pumps, valves, anchor blocks, and other fittings along with the cost of installation, the cost for the small diameter pipe would be approximately $150,000 and for the large diameter pipe $400,000. The cost of heat exchangers, distribution piping, and building retrofits would add another $250,000 to the small diameter pipe system since it would be supply heat to existing building, whereas it would only add $100,000 to the large diameter pipe system as it would supply heat to new construction. Thus, the total would be $400,000 and $500,000 respectively. The paybacks for these projects would be around three years. This project could easily be implemented in 18 to 24 months. Another alternative is to suspend the pipe below one of the bridges across the river, thus eliminating the logistical challenges associated with placement of the pipe on or below the river bed and anchoring it to the bottom. This would reduce the cost by $50,000 for the small diameter pipe and $100,000 for the large diameter pipe. It does not appear to be practical or economically feasible to collect the waste water from the numerous warm springs flowing into the river. In addition, most of these springs have already been appropriated by the Yampah pool owners. 7. Using Geothermal Heat Pumps Geothermal (ground-source) heat pumps (GHP) have the advantage of being useable anywhere in the area, as they only require ground or ground water temperatures between 40 and 90oF. In additional they can supply both heating and cooling, which lend themselves especially to commercial, public and governmental buildings, as the cooling load required from lights and occupants can be just as much as the heating load, even in Colorado. A secondary low boiling point working fluid (hydrocarbon) is circulated between the heat pump and the building heating system – either a water-to-air or water-to-water system. GHPs do, however, require electrical energy input into the compressor, usually about 20 to 25% of the energy output. Typical units in the heating mode have Coefficients of Performance (COP) of around 4.0 (unitless)– thus, for every unit of electrical energy input, four units of heating or cooling energy are produced (energy output/energy input). In the cooling mode, the COP equivalent is referred to as Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) and again is the ratio of energy output divided by energy input in Btu/hr/watt. The EER equivalent to a COP of 4 is about 14 Btu/hr/watt. Two main systems are used with GHP – open loop systems using well or surface water, and closed loop using the earth as the heat source or sink in either a vertical mode or horizontal mode (see Figure 15). Figure 16 (cooling mode) and Figure 17 (heating mode), show both EER and COP and the effect of entering water temperature (EWT). Thus, a low entering water temperature of say 50oF, would have a high EER of 22.2 Btu/hr/W (cooling mode), but a low COP of 4.2 (heating mode), whereas a high entering water temperature of say 80oF would have a lower EER of 16.0 Btu/hr/W (cooling mode), and a high COP of 5.3 (heating mode). These numbers will vary depending upon the equipment used. These diagrams are generic and do not necessarily reflect the conditions for equipment that might be used in Glenwood Springs.
