A possible scenario would be to use a shallow and highly permeability aquifer of geothermal fluid where only heat is removed. A vault could be installed with a heat exchanger (such as Slim Jim® Geo Lake Plate® heat exchangers, or slinky coils) (Photo 7) transferring the energy to city water, which is then piped to each building. Each building would then have a heat pump or fossil fuel system to boost the temperature when needed. Fossil fuel units may already be installed in existing buildings, and thus not require a new installation. In warmer weather, the geothermal use would be stopped, and only the city water in the 50 to 60oF range would be used with a heat pump to provide cooling. In either case, no geothermal water would be pumped from the ground. For a 50,000 ft2 commercial, institutional and/or public building a single vault with plate heat exchanger could be installed. If a Slim Jim® was used, this unit would be required to provide 145 tons of heating and consist of 29 plates with one-foot spacing between plates. The unit would require a concrete vault approximately 5 ft by 9 ft by 30 feet. The installation would cost ~$100,000, and with a heat pump for boosting the temperature costing $25,000 for a 25 ton unit, plus $75,000 for piping, for a total of $200,000. Assuming 35 Btu/sf/hr heating load, the peak load would be 1.75 million Btu/hr and the annual load would be 5.36 billion Btu (using a load factor for heating and cooling of 0.35). The O&M would be around $10,000/yr and the energy savings $42,900/yr for a net savings of $32,900, for a simple payback of six years. This system could be installed and operating in 12 to 18 months. This system was compared with open and closed loop geothermal heat pump systems. The respective capital costs would be $275,000 and $493,000 and the respective net savings would be $34,900 and $37,900. This would provide simple paybacks of 8 and 13 years respectively. Photo 7.
