9. Heating the Community Center The Community Center is located on the south bank of the Colorado River on the west edge of town. It consists of a 39,300 ft2 building with a lap pool, an activity pool and a hot tub. These pools and tub are kept at 83, 93 and 100oF respectively. The water facilities are covered and are operated year-round. The facility is heated with natural gas, and since the consumption is high, the possible use of geothermal heating is of interest to reduce costs. Source Gas provided three years of natural gas consumption for the facility as follows: Period June 08 – May 09 June 07 – May 08 June 06 – May 07 Average Therms Peak month 79,240 January 09 85,744 January 08 109,172 January 07 91,385 Therms 10,600 11,020 15,300 Using the peak month to determine the design hourly peak, and assuming that the building heat is set back at night, the heating demand should be fairly constant during the 24 hours period. For lack of any other information, the peak is then assumed to be the 15,300 therms for January 07 or 21 therms/hr. This is a heating load of 175 tons (1 ton = 12,000 Btu/hr). We are also assuming a natural gas rate of $1.15/therm. This is slightly higher than the City is currently paying for natural gas (around $1.00/therm), but it will allow for future escalation in price. Several alternative uses of geothermal energy to provide heat to the building and water facilities are proposed for consideration. These include: • Direct use of the 122oF geothermal resource by drilling production and injection wells. • Open loop geothermal heat pump system • Closed loop geothermal heat pump system • Using the waste water from the pool that issues from a pipe on the north side of the river. 9a. Direct Use of the Geothermal Resource. It is estimated that the geothermal resource in the Leadville Limestone is at a depth of 1,000 feet in this area. Based on drilling two 1000-foot deep wells (production and injection well), the following costs are estimated for the heating system. 2 wells at 1,000 feet each at $125/foot: 30 hp pump for the production well: Piping and retrofit for the heating system: Total capital cost: $250,000 $100,000 $100,000 $450,000 Annual operating cost of 30 hp pump at $0.04/kWh: Other O&M costs: Total annual cost: Annual savings of 91,385 therms at $1.15/therm: $6,000 $6,000 $12,000 $105,100 42
