Hybrid System. The main advantage of this system is that the direct-use geothermal portion can be designed for as little as 50% of the peak load, and still meet the total annual demand over 80% of the time. The remaining 20%, generally only a few days a year during the coldest period, can be supplied by geothermal heat pumps or with fossil fuel heating units. A suitable site must be found that is shallow and has high geothermal ground water through-flow to provide the necessary heat to a vault where plate heat exchangers or slinky coils are installed. Heating the Community Center The Community Center could be provided with geothermal heat from several sources: (1) direct use by drilling a production and injection well; (2) use of an open loop geothermal heat pump system; (3) use of a closed loop geothermal heat pump system; and, (4) use of waste water obtained from the pool. The option having the least capital cost and most favorable payback (5 years) is the direct use option. Accordingly, this is the one recommended for further investigation. CONCLUSIONS The four best alternatives in terms of simple payment appear to be in order: 1) using the waste water resources; 2) the hybrid system; 3) district heating using a supply and injection well; and, 4) open loop geothermal heat pumps. Heating the Community Center by drilling a direct-use production and injection well also appears to be an alternative worth considering. Electric power generation does not appear feasible due to the high cost and risk of drilling the well (Appendix C - Table 3). In addition, the various alternatives in nine different categories have been ranked using a subjective range from 1 to 10, with 1 being difficult/expensive to implement, and 10 being easy/inexpensive to implement. The highest rating went to use of the waste water resources (8.1 and 7.9) followed by use of downhole heat exchangers (6.7 and 6.8) and the hybrid system (6.7) (Appendix D - Table 4). The Community Center was not rated. POTENTIAL FUNDING SOURCES INTRODUCTION One of the tasks to be completed under the contract was to identify potential funding sources in an effort to develop a beneficial geothermal resource program for Glenwood Springs. During the research it was noted that Colorado’s Senate Bill 07-51 and Senate Bill 08-147 require that buildings must comply with the Office of State Architect’s (OSA) High Performance Certification Program (HPCP) if 25% of the capital construction budget was received from the state.
