FEDERAL FUNDING There have been four Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) released since the start of 2009 with various closing dates. Unfortunately all of the solicitations has closed but have included summaries for three of the four below. For more complete information on each of the FOAs you can go to the following webpage and download the information. https://www.fedconnect.net/Fedconnect/PublicPages/PublicSearch/Public_Opportunities.aspx Recovery Act: Enhanced Geothermal System Demonstrations – DE-FOA-0000092 This was originally issued on the 4th of March 2009, and the second amendment has changed the closing date to July 30th. Below is a partial description of the FOA taken from the announcement. The objective of this announcement is to seek projects in a variety of geologic formations that will quantitatively demonstrate and validate stimulation techniques that successfully sustain sufficient fluid flow and heat extraction rates for 5-7 years that produce up to 50 MWe per year per project site/geothermal reservoir. DOE will also consider projects to further characterize, stimulate, and validate underutilized geothermal resources, particularly in urban and rural regions with high electricity costs such as Alaska, Hawaii, the eastern U.S., Indian Reservations, etc. This underutilized resource may potentially be re- engineered using EGS technology to produce a commercial geothermal reservoir capable of producing baseload electrical power for transmission to the electric grid or substitution of fossil fuel usage. Awards made under this announcement will be cooperative agreements that will include well stimulation and data collection and analysis over three Phases. The projects funded under this announcement will add to the general EGS knowledge base and/or help accelerate technology improvements in order to fully commercialize unproductive or underproductive geothermal resources. Recovery Act: Geothermal Technologies Program - DE-FOA-0000109 This was originally issued on the 27th of May 2009, and the closing date is July 22nd. There have been no amendments to this FOA at this time. Below is a partial description of the FOA taken from the announcement. This FOA does not cover the cost of drilling a well. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Program (GTP) intends to continue its partnership with the geothermal community on geothermal systems research, exploration, demonstration, and development throughout the United States. This three-topic FOA will focus on areas associated with geothermal energy as outlined in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), Sections 613 and 616. This FOA will also address section 931(a)(2)(C) of the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005. Funding will be made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Topic Area 1: Validation of Innovative Exploration Technologies EISA Section 613 addresses the demonstration of innovative site characterization and/or drilling exploration technologies. GTP’s goal is to reduce the high level of risk during the early stages of geothermal project development by funding the validation of innovative exploration activities to locate undiscovered geothermal systems and increase the reliability of site characterization to prioritize target sites for energy production. 47PDF Image | GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLORADO
