To: John Lund From: G. W. Huttrer Date: June 17, 2009 MEMORANDUM Re: 6/16/09 trip to Glenwood Springs On Tuesday, June 16, 2009, I drove to Glenwood Springs to meet with Dean Moffatt regarding his ideas for heat pump utilization as previously discussed with you by phone. Before going to Moffatt’s office, I stopped in City Hall and met with Robin Millyard for a few minutes. I told him that we are making good progress on our geothermal report and that it will be done on time. He told me that the Geothermal Council has not met since we were there and that he has not been under any pressure regarding the geothermal studies. I did not mention that I had come specifically to meet with Dean Moffatt. I then met with Dean and Bill Lorah (of Wright Water Engineers) from about 0930 to 1430 (including lunch). We discussed Dean’s ideas for using Slim-Jims buried in purpose-dug gravel pits to supply heat to at least 11 existing buildings and probably to some more yet to be built. The pits would be dug on the Redstone plot (now for sale) and also on the Confluence Triangle (now the site of the Sewage Plant that will be torn down and moved west in about 2 years and a potential site for a Performing Arts Facility). I mentioned that heat pumps do not work well with inflows in the 90 to 119oF range and that such waters would actually have to be cooled to optimize HP efficiencies in both the heating and cooling modes. Dean and Bill observed that “raw” City water at about 54oF is available from hydrants near both referenced land plots. The ratio of cool City water to thermal water could be electronically adjusted to suit the ambient temperature during the various seasons. I told Dean and Bill about the newly announced Heat Pump FOA and showed him how get into the DOE website and we immediately obtained a synopsis of the FOA. The men were both very enthusiastic about this funding possibility (even with 50% cost share) and they promptly made plans to speak to the Mayor and a couple of other staunch geothermal proponents. I also gave Eric Hass’s phone number to Dean so that he could speak in person to the man in charge of the FOA administration. I hinted that OIT might be able to present an “Executive Summary” of the geothermal report in July. This might provide some technical information needed for the City to apply for the Heat Pump FOA that closes on August 6. Note that the awarded funds must be spent within 5 years, so a 50-100 ton minimum sized project could well be implemented in Glenwood in that time frame). 67
