Consequently, geothermal power projects have a high priority. Geothermal power currently supplies 13% of the country’s totalelectricitydemand. Ahuachapánhasaninstalled capacityof95MWe;BerlínBocaPozoI,10MWe. An additional 60 MWe of capacity is under construction. By 2000, geothermal will supply about 20% of El Salvador’spower. By2010,itisestimatedthattherewill be380MWeofgeothermalinstalledcapacity. Todate,the GOES has invested over US$100 million in geothermal exploration and development but plans to be completely out of the geothermal development business by 2000. El Salvador began exploring its geothermal potential in the mid1960s. ThesouthernPlio-QuaternaryVolcanicBelt representstheprincipaltargetofexploration,withmajor geothermal zones, hot springs, hot wells, fumaroles, and exposuresofhydrothermalactivities. Mostactivitieswere halted during the Civil War (1980-1992). Six priority areas in terms of generating power potential havebeenidentified. Stretchingacrossthecountryfrom westtoeast,theyareAhuachapán,Chipilapa,Coatepeque, SanVicente,Berlín,andChinameca. AllexceptChinameca arehighenthalpy,liquid-dominatedfields.
