A grid-connected geothermal project in Guatemala must compete directly on the basis of price with other forms of power. AccordingtoaHaglerBaillystudy,thebaseload marginal cost for generation in Guatemala is 4ยข/kWh (Germain, 1998). INDE began geothermal exploration in Guatemala in 1972 withassistancefromseveralsourcesincludingtheIDB,the Japanese Government; OPEC; OLADE; the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and the European Economic Community (EC). From 1975 to 1994, the GOG spent close to $25 million in geothermal researchand development, surface exploration, and exploratory drilling; $13 million in field development; and $38 million in electrical utilization, for a total of $76 million.
