Potential Use The heat of the Earth is considered infinite; its use is only limited by technology and the associated costs. Natural geothermal reservoirs in the Western U.S. are some of the most conducive to traditional hydrothermal power production systems, and geothermal will continue to expand there. Production is also viable in more states and areas of the world as research and development uncovers additional new resources and proves new innovative technologies. Today, we are looking at new developments in coproduction at oil and gas wells, enhanced geothermal systems, geopressured resources, and supercritical cycles. 3.1. What is the potential of using geothermal resources in the U.S.? There is enough geothermal energy available from the Earth to meet the power needs of humankind many times over.
