Ranges of savings for the two GSHPs are also slightly lower compared to the residential example above. 3.9 Technical Potential Primary Energy Savings “Technical potential” refers to the theoretical primary energy savings associated with replacing 100 percent of the technically applicable baseline installations with the advanced technology. While this potential will never be achieved, it does suggest an upper limit, should the advanced technology be universally adopted. We calculate the technical potential as if all existing equipment has the efficiency of new equipment. This way, we don’t double count the energy savings that will occur anyway, without further DOE action, based on normal replacement cycles.
