did, with a visit to the USA, the world’s largest user of geothermal energy. The delegation was led by Heavy Engineering Research Association Industry Development Manager Nick Inskip and commenced with the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA) Geothermal Showcase Conference in Washington DC. The showcase provided a good overview of geothermal projects in the USA and from around the world and included a presentation by Mike Allen, Chair of Geothermal New Zealand collaboration. The next stop on the trip was Mechanical Solutions Inc. in New Jersey, where the delegation met with the CEO and his team of specialists, the company has a strong research and development focus. The delegation was introduced to their TEI Turbine technology. United Technologies Research Centre (UTRC) in Connecticut was the next visit and the delegation got to see the Pure Cycle 250kWe Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plant in their test facility and hear how UTRC works. The Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Centre in Casper, Wyoming was the next destination. This was particularly interesting because they were using ORC plants on both production and depleted oil wells. The oil fields are a naval petroleum reserve and are operated by the Department of Energy. The delegation then headed to Reno in Nevada for a visit with ORC plant producer Electratherm, who have a 65kWe ORC solution, which the delegation was able to see operating. This was followed by a visit to geothermal technology site developer and operator Ormat, where the delegation was given a tour of the Steamboat geothermal field. The final visit in Reno was to geothermal developer Geothermal Development Associates, who the delegation had previously met at the Geothermal Showcase. From Reno, the delegation flew to Los Angeles and visited Energent, located in Santa Ana. At Energent, the delegates were met by the CEO and management team and were able to look at their innovative multiphase turbine. Overall the trip provided a significant insight into the operation of key aspects of the geothermal industry, the different approaches being taken by companies in the USA and an appreciation of the technologies being developed to meet emerging market needs. A key message from the trip was that a lot of information is only available if you actually go and visit companies in person and that ‘If you don’t go, you don’t know’. Being as remote as we are from markets, we need to build the bridges to facilitate business and that was a core outcome of the trip. All Energy Conference 2012, Melbourne – 10th to 11th October The All-Energy Australia, exhibition and conference is being hosted in Melbourne this year on 10 - 11 October 2012. Considered Australia's largest clean energy event, it offers extensive networking opportunities through the Grand Networking Evening. Admission is free of charge to all with a professional interest in renewable/sustainable/clean energy. HERA Clean Energy Research Engineer Dr Boaz Habib will be attending the conference and invites HERA members to join him. The exhibition is a companion event to the premier UK All Energy conference held each year in Aberdeen in Scotland. It represents an important opportunity for companies interested in, or working in the fast growing, clean energy sector. The Conference and exhibition will cover everything from wave and tidal, solar and geothermal energy, to fuel cells, hydrogen, biofuels and carbon capture and sequestration. More information about the conference is available at http://www.all-energy.com.au/. If you are interested in joining the HERA delegation to All Energy in Melbourne, please contact Dr. Boaz Habib at boaz.habib@hera.org.nz Commerce Commission Work in the Construction Sector For the last 18 months or so, the Commerce Commission has been working with the construction sector to raise levels of awareness and compliance with competition law. This initiative started with some research that they did to assess what construction firms thought about and knew about competition issues. Their survey found that in general, levels of awareness were not very high. And also, the issue of cover pricing came to light – The Commission has been advising people that this practice can put businesses at risk under the Act. HERA NEWS Jul 2012 Page 5
