Milking the Potential – Another Record-breaking Achievement for Stainless Steel The dairy industry has taken off in this country, and with it, the call for our most versatile alloy. GEA – a major international engineering company that provides process technologies to the food and chemical industries – has successfully tendered to construct a turn-key milk powder processing facility for Fonterra at Darfield in Canterbury. “This will include the world’s largest yielding dairy spray dryer,” says Robert Iremonger, GEA Team Leader - Evap/Dryer NZ But this is the truly staggering statistic in terms of our industry – 173 kilometres of stainless steel tube will be installed into the plant’s five falling film evaporators, which are effectively specialised heat exchangers. That’s long enough to stretch across Cook Strait more than six times over! Put another way, around two million kilograms of stainless steel will be needed to fabricate the pipework and equipment for this plant. It is estimated that one million man-hours will be needed by GEA and its subcontractors to complete this job. That is equivalent 10 men working full-time for 50 years. When completed, the entire operation will be highly automated requiring only a low level of operator intervention – this will allow the plant to be run with a minimum of staff from a centralised control room. Essentially, the plant transforms the fresh milk into a dry milk product for shipment around the world. Only 5% of our fresh milk is used fresh here in New Zealand. The plant is required to be completed ready to process milk by August 2013. “In fact, the order is one of the most substantial ever for GEA here – with figures amounting to more than $NZ150 million.” However, there are several impressive figures that demonstrate the scale of the project and the part SS plays in its creation. “The second dairy spray dryer at the Darfield site will be capable of producing 30 tonnes per hour of milk powder from 4.4 Million Litres per day of milk,” says Robert. “To keep the plant full will require milk from 260,000 cows.” Over Past 12 Months The Industry Capability Network NZ (ICN NZ), a New Zealand business networking organisation that introduces local companies to major projects in New Zealand and overseas, has helped New Zealand companies secure $40m worth of deals over the last 12 months.
