verified, HERA has decided to offer a new service called “HERA Verified”. HERA Verified is a quality mark awarded to testify that a manufacturers’ technical data has been independently verified by HERA. The scheme covers the reliability of the range of performance data offered by suppliers where, for example, the product is new or the values are not based on calculation in accordance with established Standards. Following a verification of products or services, HERA will grant an annual licence to use the HERA Verified logo, which has been registered as a trademark. The logo will have a unique reference, which will relate to the scope of work given on the HERA Verified website. It should be noted, however, that no confidential data will be made available on the website. In most cases, the test programme followed to achieve HERA Verified will be satisfactory to achieve CE Marking if the test procedures and analyses follow the formal approaches documented in the Eurocodes. HERA’s support for manufacturers wishing to CE Mark their products includes developing a European T echnical Approval (if necessary), arranging any testing that is required and analysis of test results (typically using structural reliability techniques according to ISO 2394, which also forms the basis to AS/NZS 1170). Manufacturers will also need the support of a Notified Body to undertake an assessment of the Factory Production Control. HERA can assist manufacturers in the CE Marking process and has good international links with Notified Bodies who have helped a number of New Zealand businesses. Building Controls Update No. 133: Practice Advisory 14 Long Span Trusses and Stadium Steel Roof Southland Investigation Reports Available Now The Department of Building and Housing has issued Practice Advisory 14: Long Span Steel Roof Trusses in response to the collapse on 18 September 2010 of the Stadium Southland roof in Invercargill, during a snow storm. The Practice Advisory provides guidance to building owners, territorial authorities and practising structural engineers, and is now available on the Department's website at http://www.dbh.govt.nz/practice-advisory-14 Southland Stadium investigation reports The independent technical investigation commissioned by the Department, and conducted jointly by Hyland and StructureSmith, found the roof of Invercargill's Stadium Southland collapsed because of substandard building design and construction. You can download the independent report and the Department's response to it at www.dbh.govt.nz/southland-stadium As reported last months, HERA is supporting the execution of the DBH advisory by offering a seminar series providing background information to the tasks on hand. The seminar series entitled “What Every Structural Engineering Should Know About Welding” is described in the Welding Centre section of this Newsletter (page 8).
