Unalaska In the 1980s, the Alaska Power Authority conducted a feasibility study of the Makushin Reservoir in Unalaska and found a sizeable well that produced water at 382°F and pressure at 497 pounds per square inch (PSI). This could potentially produce 10-15 MW of power, which is enough for the demand of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor. The municipality of Unalaska is hoping to continue exploratory drilling to understand the development potential of the resource. In 2008, AEA gave a grant of $1.5 million to the city, matched by the city, for further exploratory drilling. In 2009, DOE gave a $1 million grant to the city of Unalaska to find commercial grade geothermal for the development of a 10-12 MW power plant. Manley Hot Springs Manley is 160 miles northwest of Fairbanks, and it is home to around 125 people. The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA), through the Renewable Energy Grant is exploring the potential for development in this area. Due to the success at Chena, there is much hope to develop a similar project at Manley Hot Springs. Mt. Spurr Mt. Spurr is located 75 miles west of Anchorage and has the potential to deliver power to the Railbelt because of its close location. Drilling in 2010 showed high temperatures, and more drilling was planned for 2011 to confirm. It was expected to be able to provide between 50 and 100 MW; however, the drilling in 2011 did not yield positive results. The project is currently being developed by Ormat Technologies who believes that it is likely to be successful and that the project will be completed, but they are considering other options including drilling deeper or in other locations.
