Current Hydroelectric Activity in Alaska In Alaska, hydroelectric power supplies 21% of the electrical energy consumption and makes up 90% of the renewable energy sources used in the state3. In 2010, 37 hydro projects produced hydroelectric power, and many more projects are being considered. Even with the benefit of cheap, reliable energy, there are some drawbacks from hydroelectric power. These drawbacks normally have to do with ecosystem concerns. According the Regulatory Commission of Alaska, some of the impacts include: stratification of reservoir water, supersaturation of water spilled over the dam, changing water levels and flow, sedimentation, erosion, flow alterations and habitat conditions Current Projects Bradley Lake The Bradley Lake project is located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula near Homer and includes a 610-foot long, 125-foot high gravity dam and 3.5-mile long power tunnel. The project generates 126 MW and transmits via two, 20-mile transmission lines to the Railbelt. This represents about 8% of the electricity needed in the Railbelt. The utility has shared ownership between Chugach Electric Association (30.4%), Anchorage Municipal Light and Power (25.9%), Homer Electric Association (12.0%), Matanuska Electric Association (13.8%), Golden Valley Electric Association (16.9%) and Seward Electric Utility (1.0%). AEA has contracted Homer Electric Association to operate the project. Blue Lake Image 2. Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Project. Source: AEA The city of Sitka receives the majority of its electrical energy from the Blue Lake and Green Lake Hydroelectric Projects. The Blue Lake Project was approved in 1958 for a 50-year license and was renewed again in 2008. Because of rising fuel oil costs and new businesses, the demand for electricity has increased4, so the City and Borough of Sitka have begun an expansion that would replace the two 3 MW generators with three 5.3 MW generators increasing total capacity to 17 MW and increase height of the impoundment dam 83 feet to 425 feet. This expansion would increase energy production by 29% of the system capacity. The expansion cost is expected to be $100 million of which 51% has come from 3 Renewable Energy Atlas, 2011. 4“Blue Lake Expansion.” 7
