Operations APS Team in Boston APS managers, Larisa and Jimmy Proko- peuff, who became permanent and full time employees on January 1, 2010, accompanied Shore-Side Operations Manager Ken Smith and COO Joe Kyle to Boston in March to at- tend the annual, International Boston Sea- food Show. The team makes the trip to keep abreast of various products and techniques that further value and efficiency in seafood production. After two days at the show exam- ining products, they headed to Seattle to meet with equipment manufacturers, Baader and Carnitech, where they received training for a skinning machine and scan grader. Also on the team’s agenda before heading back to Alaska, was a visit to Trident in Bellingham for product and sales discussions. APS BBQ Atka Pride Seafoods held a BBQ on May 12 in appreciation of Atka’s community members for their support of the newly reconstructed plant, and in celebration of the 2010 halibut season. APS remained closed last season due to a massive overhaul to the aging struc- ture that began in the winter of 2008. The plant reopened this May with its first delivery of fish on the 27th. Bering Pacific Seafoods Over the winter season, projects were com- pleted to strengthen the power generation and refrigeration systems, as well as upgrad- ing a freezer van into operational condition. The freezer van will permit the storage of small quantities of frozen inventory when needed, allowing the plant to save on the energy costs of running the larger cold stor- age at non-peak times. In the 2010 processing season, BPS will continue processing all salmon species, hali- but, and sablefish. In addition, a value added production program will be introduced into the product mix; the program will include modest amounts of high end, H&G sockeye, and sockeye filets for market testing pur- poses. APICDA Vessels Inc. All vessels underwent annual repairs and improvements over the winter. The Konrad 1 and Taty Z were laid up in False Pass, the AP1 in St. George, the AP2 in Atka, the Pogo in Nikolski, and the Atka Pride and Konrad 1 in Homer. 1. The state fishery opened on February 26 and closed on March 23 with a total catch of 224,000 lbs. Total combined harvest by the Konrad equaled 556,000 lbs. 2. F/V Atka Pride’s on going winter mainte- nance included complete sandblast and paint outside, which will continue next year with wheelhouse and deck focus.
