2010 Community Conference Highlights APICDA Youth Conference A newly established Youth Con- ference was held in conjunction with the annual APICDA Com- munity Conference this April. Eric Willhite, from Nikolski, and Chelsea Lekanof, from St. George, were the program’s first participants. Eric and Chel- sea spent two afternoons dis- cussing Junior Achievement Economics for Success with members of the APICDA Hu- man Resources department. Topics of the program included: Identifying careers Positive decision making The roll of higher education Balancing a budget Differentiating gross from net income The functions of cash and credit We look forward to seeing this program grow and would like to extend an invitation to the youths of the Aleutian Pribilof region to join us again next year. Renewable Energy Attendees of APICDA’s annual Community Outreach Conference held in Anchorage April 22 & 23 enjoyed a lively presentation by Chena Hot Springs/Chena Power owner and operator, Bernie Karl. Through Chena Power, Chena Hot Springs Resort strives to be a global example for self-sustaining communities using the sources of energy available to its area. Mr. Karl shared information with the group on geothermal power for heating and refrigeration; bio mass, as a renewable source of energy; ice museums, in 80° F and growing vegetables at - 45°. Chena Power currently supplies the resort with heat using geo- thermal energy, although biomass, solar, and wind energy sup- plies are being actively explored. The resort has been running on a geothermal powered turbine since 2006, when Chena Power joined forces with United Technologies to create a small scale, moderate temperature turbine.
