In 2004, the Aurora Ice Hotel was created using over 1,000 tons of ice complete with a functional bar, six guestrooms, and ice chan- deliers. The original structure succumbed to summer temperatures and was recon- structed using a patented absorption chiller. The resort’s absorption chiller is capable of producing 15 tons of refrigeration on 10 amps of electricity for 12 dollars a day. Another wonderful feature of Chena Hot Springs Resort is its greenhouses. In 2004, a small test greenhouse was constructed to determine whether produce could be suc- cessfully grown year-round using geothermal heat. The trial greenhouse proved to be suc- cessful and two much larger greenhouses supply the resort’s kitchens today with fresh vegetables on a continual basis.
