Weatherization is the science of making a dwelling more energy-efficient by making improvements that may result in a return on investment in the form of reduced energy consumption, reduced energy costs, and/or increased comfort and dura- bility of the dwelling. Purpose: The purpose of the Weatherization Program is to make homes energy efficient as well as reduce energy costs. Weatherization through AHA fo- cuses on the weatherization of low income homes in 10 Aleutian Pribilof Island communities, includ- ing: Akutan, Atka, Dutch Harbor / Unalaska, False Pass, King Cove, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, Saint George, Saint Paul, and Sand Point. Scope: AHA plans to replace oversized and inefficient boilers in eligible homes, which alone will reduce energy consumption significantly. The program will also focus on air-sealing, window and door replacements (as appropriate), re-insulating, mois- ture control for mold prevention, and repairs re- lated to weatherization. This program is NOT the Rebate Program. Both the Rebate Program and the Weatherization Pro- gram are funded by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation but only the Weatherization Program is a FREE GRANT PROGRAM supporting low- income households. The program allows us to spend up to $25,000 in weatherization upgrades that the homeowner will not have to pay back. Benefits: Reduces drafts increasing comfort and safety, healthier, more durable, more comfortable, and more affordable homes. Resident health and safety are improved by reducing problems such as respiratory irri tants, carbon monoxide, excess moisture, and mold. Mitigation of additional health and safety conditions, such as: furnace repair or replace ment, chimney and wood stove repairs, un safe lighting repairs, other minor electrical repairs, and provision of egress windows dur ing bedroom window replacement. Replacing unsafe heating systems prevents fires or dangerous release of carbon monox ide, as well as increased energy efficiency and home affordability. Client education is an important way to in forms clients of how their homes work, how to maintain weatherized homes, conserve energy, and helps them to prioritize future improvements. Weatherization is GREEN Weatherization, the nation’s premier residential home renovation program is also the nation’s most cohesive residential “green” program. Weatherization has been a pioneer in modernizing the building industry’s skills in providing energy efficient upgrades. No program in America is having the daily impact that Weatherization has in reducing the carbon footprint of the nation’s housing.
