Page 16 Analysis of possibilities for 1MW electricity generation from waste heat in the port of Rotterdam The working fluid is boiled using the heat given out by the hot source. Next, the fluid enters the separator and divides it into two streams: the stream with high ammonia concentration in vapour phase will expand in the turbine and the stream with low concentration in liquid phase will be used in the regenerator. The two streams merge in the condenser, where the fluid condenses by giving out heat to the cold source. The stream with the middle concentration is heated in the same regenerator and the cycle starts again. 1.5.1 Superior performance compared to ORC The Kalina cycle uses a mixture of water and ammonia as a working fluid and this is the main reason why it has better performance than ORC. In plain words, it “follows” better the T-Q curve (temperature vs heat) and the T-H (temperature vs entropy) so that it is able to extract more heat from the same source. Figures 1.4 and 1.5 accurately reflect this fact, extracted from [Ref. 13] and [Ref. 14].
