5. Case Study of Harads in Norrbotten, Sweden Harads is a small village which stretches 4 km along the Lule river 50 km north west of Boden in Norrbotten, Sweden. More than one third of the 1500 inhabitants live close to the village centre where you can find a gas station, food store, senior living (care centre), school, library, indoor public bath and fire department. Besides these facilities there are a number of self-employer who operates a hardware store, restaurants, firm of haulage contractors, plumber and an electricity company to mention some. The fact that the majority of the enterprises are situated in the centre of the village makes district heating a preferable alternative. Artic Heat Harads, a newly founded company, are now in the starting hole to construct a 2.6 km district heat system through the village with a corresponding heating plant of 2.0 MWth. The heating plant will be situated in the middle of the village, in order to reach as many costumers as possible in the first building stage. Most of the civil buildings will be connected to the system as well as a number of private and apartment houses. To fund the plant a contribution of about 30% comes from KLIMP (Climate investment program at Boden rural district), about 62% from loan and the rest comes from capital stocks and connection fees. With hope of increasing the solidarity in the village the households will become part-owners when they pay the connection fee. This project will generate at least one fulltime employer at the heating plant, [50, 51]. Biomass Fuel As mentioned before Harads is located in a very rural area of Norrbotten, with large amounts of biomass surrounding the village. The fuel will consist of wood chips bought from local forest owners why the plant probably will generate employment in the forest as well. The assumed moisture content of the fuel is in the range of 30-50% wt, [50, 51]. Heat Load The heat load is not yet decided. However estimations of the heat demand in the larger buildings in Harads shows that the annual consumption amounts to 3285 MWhth. If this is converted with the thumb rule of 2.4 (kW/MWh/a) a total capacity of 1.5 MWth is needed, see Table 5.1. Although the plant considered will be 2 MWth since there are plans to expand the district heat network in the future. 54
