H. Common Gasifiers Updraft In a fixed bed updraft gasifier (Figure 8.3) biomass is fed from the top of the gasifier. The fuel flows slowly down by gravity and passes through the drying, pyrolysis and combustion zone. Ashes fall through a grate at the bottom and are removed by an ash discharge system. Furthermore the air and steam is introduced below the grate. Bottom ash is in general completely oxidized with very small amounts of unburned carbon. Since the products of the drying and pyrolysis zones are directly drawn out as product gas without any further decomposition reactions, the product gas has high content of tars and oils. This usually means that the gas has to be cleaned before further usage. The gas temperature is usually low (80 – 300°C). The dust content of the gas is also relatively low due to the moderate gas velocities and the fact that the drying and pyrolysis zone has a filtering effect. Updraft gasifiers can handle fuel particle sizes between 5 and 100 mm and moisture contents up to 50% wt, allowing it to use a large variety of fuels, [9, 14].
