Briquette The briquettes are manufactured in a similar way as pellets, the difference is the use of more brute sawdust. Thus the briquette is not as compact as a pellet. Briquettes also have a higher moisture content which amounts to ~10 % wt. The heating value is about 4.6 kWh/kg, [63]. Dust Dust is made by sawdust or woodchips which first is dried and then grinded to fraction of >1mm. Dust have a moisture content of about 8% wt and a volume weight of 200 kg/m3s, [63]. Agricultural Fuels Reed Canary Grass Reed canary grass is an energy crop and has qualities similar to straw regarding technology in harvesting, storage and transports. There are two cultivation periods relating to Reed canary grass, summer- and spring harvest. Concerning chemical and combustion properties the summer harvest has great similarities with the ordinary straw. On the other hand the spring harvest which is gathered just after the snow melts, have a good deal better combustion properties. The spring harvest has significant higher ash melting point then other straw fuels. Chlorine and potassium content is significant lower which minimize the risk of corrosion. Annual crop yields amounts to ~7.5 ToneDry/ha. The energy content is 16.9 MJ/kg LHV and the moisture content is just 10 % wt. Production cost amounts to 13-20 €/MWh (1996), [64]. Salix The salix (willow) family includes Common Osier (Salix viminalis) and Thick-branched Willow (Salix dasyclados) among others. They have the mutual quality of continuous harvesting from the same stub for several years. Harvesting season occurs every fourth year during the winter, since the trees have no leafs during this time of year. Nevertheless Salix also requires good arable soil and requires to be replanted every third decade. Two harvesting methods are used at present, whole sprig harvest and direct chip harvest. The whole sprig harvest is little more expensive than chipping on place. However chipped Salix is very sensitive to decomposition and should not be stored for long periods. New bundling techniques are under development which will favour the whole sprig harvesting method. The crop yield is premeditated to be 10 ToneDry/ha-year.
