Using toluene in the OFC leads to an efficiency increase of about 9% (towards the lower end of the 9-13% range for Modified OFC) when compared to the ORC system. OFC Efficiency Gain vs. ORC Using Different Working Fluids Component Cost Assessment The following sections explore the capital cost benefits of the Modified OFC by comparing the OFC and the ORC on cost differences associated with the heater and condenser, turbine / generator, flash evaporator and other auxiliary components. Heater & Condenser The two major components in both the ORC and the OFC are the heater and the condenser. In the ORC, the heater must heat the organic liquid to a gaseous state. Therefore, the heating process requires three different components: a regenerator, a preheater, and an evaporator. These three components constituting the heater account for as much as 60% of the total system component cost. In contrast, the OFC, given its innovative two-step evaporation process, eliminates the need for a phase change in the organic working fluid, and therefore, requires only a preheater and no regenerator or evaporator.
