As such, development and maintenance considerations should be fairly similar between the two technologies and is what we have assumed in our cost modeling. The four additional components in the OFC include a flash evaporator, a two-stage turbine, a throttling valve, and a mixer. As previously described, the flash evaporator is commonly used in chemical and food preparation industries. The two-stage turbine is created from cascading two smaller turbines. The throttling valve and the mixer are typical industrial products and exist in daily appliances, such as refrigerators. Thus, all of the additional components in the OFC are commercially available. Conclusion: Payback Period & NPV of End-of-Life Values The payback period for a 1 MW ORC is estimated to be approximately 3.2 years. The hypothetical 1 MW OFC system, given its advantages of a 9% higher efficiency, along with a 5% reduction in component costs, is estimated to have a payback period of 2.8 years, which is 12.5% shorter than that of the ORC.
