Germany is perhaps one of the best examples where the government has significantly influenced the heat-to-power industry. Given its ambitious goal to produce 35% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and 80% by 2050, Germany is providing a number of incentives for geothermal, biomass, and industrial waste heat recovery projects.73 For example, under its Renewable Energy Act, Germany offers a feed-in tariff74 for energy generated from landfill gas, biomass, geothermal, and solar thermal sources,75 which would include installations of ORC systems that are part of those generation facilities. Trade Organizations A number of trade organizations have been created to advocate on behalf of the heat- to-power and ORC industry. The primary goal of these groups is to push for legislation and policy that promotes the adoption of these systems. In the United States, the Heat is Power Association (“HIP”) represents ORC companies like GE, Calnetix, United Technologies, ElectraTherm, and TAS Energy and supports “the efficient, industrial use of emission-free electricity generated through Waste Heat to Power processes.”76 As part of its platform, HIP aims to recognize waste heat as a renewable equivalent and is lobbying to update Sections 45 and 48 of the U.S. tax code.77 In addition to HIP, a number of more general, renewables- focused trade associations exist including The Geothermal Energy Association,78 The Biomass Thermal Energy Council,79 and The Renewable Energy Association Biogas.80 Given the role that the ORC plays in each of these industries, these trade groups also advocate on behalf of the adoption of heat-to-power systems, albeit often indirectly. Target Market for Organic Flash Cycle Research Methodology Given the direct and relevant points of comparison between the ORC and the OFC, research into the appropriate target markets and eventual path to market for the OFC was comprised largely of a deep dive into the market composition of the ORC and overall heat-to- power industry.
