Market Selection and Filtering Process From a functional perspective to consolidate and analyze our findings, a three-stage filtering process was developed to help identify and prioritize the most promising market opportunities for the OFC. Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 1: Initial Filter Stage 1: Identify 10-15 applications for the OFC, primarily derived from brainstorming and research of the ORC team Stage 2: Apply primary filter around market size, technological fit, and market appetite to narrow list down to 3-5 applications Stage 3: Apply secondary filter around growth, competitive pressure, and available incentives to analyze final applications based on attractiveness to the OFC In many ways, the heat-to-power market is rather straightforward; any processes where heat is produced represent opportunities to convert this heat into power. As part of this stage, the team undertook a brainstorming exercise in order to consider all possible markets and applications for the OFC technology, resulting in an initial list of over 40 potential applications. From here, similar categories were consolidated and this narrowed list was compared to Table 7, which comprises nearly all of the potential installation types for the ORC. There was significant overlap here, which is not surprising given OFC’s similarities in input / output to ORC and ORC’s position as the incumbent technology in the market. However, the brainstorming exercise did generate some ideas where ORC has seen a lower degree of penetration. This may be due to the applicability of the technology within these markets, or may be due to undervalued opportunities. It became apparent that an important basis for filtering in this stage would be level of maturity for the applications. As such, the team eliminated many applications that were more niche or conceptual. Given that the goal is to analyze a potential path to market for the OFC, this seemed to be an appropriate initial criterion. Thirteen representative applications were selected to be further scrutinized.
