Appendices Appendix A. Glossary Condenser: a piece of equipment used to cool down a fluid. On one side there is a hot fluid, while on the other side there is a cold fluid which is usually at ambient temperature. At the exit of the condenser, the hot fluid has reached a lower temperature closer to the ambient. Flash evaporator: a vessel that contains a throttling valve. When saturated liquid goes through the valve, the pressure is reduced and the liquid changes state to vapor. The vessel collects liquid at the bottom and vapor at the top. Heater: a heating component in a thermal cycle, in which, the working fluid is heated by an external heat source, such as geothermal heat in a geothermal power plant. In a large scale Organic Rankine Cycle, the heater is usually composed of a regenerator, a preheater, and an evaporator, in order enhance the heat exchange efficiency inside the heater. Organic Flash Cycle (“OFC”): a variant of Organic Rankine Cycle designed by Dr. Tony Ho at UC Berkeley. Organic Rankine Cycle (“ORC”): a specific type of Rankine Cycle that uses an organic (carbon based) fluid as working fluid. Rankine Cycle: a thermal cycle that produces work from a heat source, through fluid expansion. In its basic form, it consists of an evaporator, a turbine and a condenser. Named after William Rankine (1820-1872). Throttling valve: a valve that manages the flow of fluid through a passage. When a fluid goes through a throttling valve, the fluid can be constricted or expanded. When expanded the pressure of the fluid is decreased. Two-phase expander: a piece of equipment used for extracting work from fluid. It can essentially replace a turbine.
