GE could be interested in OFC patent, after a proper analysis of the advantages. Most of the opportunities for ORC are in countries where incentives are provided, such as Germany, Italy, and Canada Interview Details: • Role at GE: Lance is a technology manager, associated with purchases and evaluating future technology. Lance worked at UTC previously, not much difference with his role at GE. Within GE, they purchased 2 years ago a start-up company. GE started to install the first organic rankine system 2 years ago, 125 kW, 140 C as heat source to 30 C as condenser temperature. • The company bought was Calnetix. It was half-way between licensing and acquisition. Calnetix Power Solutions started in Florida, as start-up. GE acquired it, as part of that, they bought all licensees and IP so to sell products and develop future products. • ORC players are from 10-50 kW all the way up to 4-5 MW, even 7 MW. There are 2 parts at GE working in this area, Heat waste systems and Oil & Gas; Oil & Gas is producing 7 MW as ORC unit. They are also taking biomass systems and matching up to ORC technology. Other companies are: TURBODEN, UTC, ORMAT. • The ORC product is focused on small biomass plants predominately and gas engine. Germany, Italy, Canada have a large push to diversify power generation, the farmers are paid to dispose farm waste, so they can attach an ORC unit to it. • Italy is doing quite a few things for the energy mix; for example, they are doing biofuel engines, they get economic incentives, since fuel is limited they want as much power as possible. ORC can get you 10% boost of total power output from same amount of fuel. For geothermal they use large generators. • For investors there is uncertainty of incentives, are the incentives going to be maintained or not? There would be large potential for users if uncertainty were not there, because any business plan you make now is uncertain. • Most of ORC costs are up-front, there are no additional costs.
