INTRODUCTION Two major objectives i n rocket engine feed system design are t o minimize weight and provide sufficient net positive suction head t o the turbopumps. Both objectives may be met %yuse of a low-speed hydraulic turbine driven inducer in the engine propellant feed system. The inducer is designed to operate at low tank pressures and to generate sufficient head to prevent cavitation of the main pump. The turbine which drives the inducer obtains its working fluid from the high pressure discharge of the main pump or inducer. Recent technology advancements (Ref. 8 ) have demonstrated t h a t a low- speed inducer can be designed that w i l l provide the main pump with the required suction head at all times. It alsohasbeen established that a low-speed inducer bas excellent starting and dynamic char- acteristics which can be accurately predicted by computer simulafion. However, since the low-speed inducer absorbs power from the main turbopump, it is important t o design an efficient and practical inducer-turbine combination which requires minimum horsepower from the hot gas turbine of the main turbopump. The purpose of this study is to determine the parameters that affect the design of an optimum low-speed inducer for an engine feed system, and t o design low-speed inducers f o r a typical LOX LE2 feed system. Using performance curves developed f o r inducer designs, analog and digital computer system simulation were used to determine the inducers' steady state and transient performance. Of particular interest is the potential simplification of propellant tank pressurization-and the elimination of feed system oscillations which lead t o "POGO" type vehicle structural problems. 5PDF Image | New and Innovative Product
