Under the above conditions the J-2s fuel pump must develop a head of 55,153 ft. at a flow of 9691 gpm and at speed of 29,600 rpm. The head of the low-speed inducer is sufficient to keep the main pump from cavitating at all times and to preclude any vaporization at the turbine discharge. The turbine flow discharges t o a back pressure of 110 psi and at a temperature which corresponds t o a vapor pressure of 60 psi. A high efficiency three stage hydraulic turbine would be necessary to produce the required horsepower if the same diameter as the 5-2 LOX low-speed inducer turbine is used. For the available pressure of about 450 psi at the main inducer discharge, 19 percent of the main inducer through flow would be used t o drive the turbine. Structurally, the existing design w i l l be adequate t o meet the operating pressures and rotor axial thrust. The bearings are also capable of high speed operation in liquid hydrogen, however, the shaft speed may be near a critical speed and will be a limiting design consideration. This brief analysis has indicated that with a minimum of hardware modification, the 5-2 LOX low-speed inducer could be tested in LEI2 at the 2 6 5 ~J-2s engine operating point.
