ENGINE DESCRXPTION The basic engine is defined in the study t o include everything downstream of the main pump inlets. It consists of: a fuel and an oxidizer turbopump driven by a series arrangement of hot gas turbines; a regeneratively fuel cooled thrust. chamber; a thrust chamber hot gas tapoff for supplying the turbine drive gases; and required valves and ducting. The pump inlet line characteristics represent those used for the Saturn S-IVB stage. Other ducting consists of! a high pressure oxidizer line which routes oxidizer from the oxidizer pump discharge through the main oxidizer valve to the injector; a high pressure fuel line which routes fuel from the fuel pump discharge through the main fuel valve to the cooling tube inlet manifold; and a cooling tube bypass which routes fuel from the fuel pump discharge through a bypass valve directly t o the fuel injector, Valves required for starting are the main oxidizer and fuel valves and the fuel cooling tube bypass valve. To start the engine the main fuel and cooling tube bypass valves are opened. This allows fuel to flow through the engine. After some period of fuel lead (one second for this study) the main oxidizer valve is opened t o a nominal 12 degree step position. This step position is held for approximately 4 seconds allowing the engine t o reach an intermediate operating level, At the completion of the 4-second step, the main oxidizer valve is ramped open in 0.8 seconds and the cooling tube bypass valve is closed in 0.8 seconds.
