t o those of Figures 22 and 23 for the low NPSP start for an engine without an inducer, the only noticeable difference is a further reduction in the minimum fuel pump flow coefficient. The inducer does generate sufficient head so that the main pump does not cavitate. No consideration was given t o changes in valve sequencing o r inducer location because a check of the hydrogen conditions a t rated performance showed the fluid to be two-phase at the exit of the hydraulic turbine. Thus, a low-head inducer would not be suitable for use as a law-speed inducer. Referring to Figure 25 oscillations are evident in the inducer pressures starting at zero time. These are due t o establishing fuel flow when the fuel valve is opened. HiPh-Head Inducer The high head inducer characteristics used in the study are shown i n Figures 6, 7, and 8. With these characteristics i n the model, the minimum steady state NPSP was determined by decreasing the fuel tank pressure until severe inducer cavitation oscillations appeared. Figure 27 shows some of the resultant system variables with the cavitation oscillations beginning at about 35 feet NPSH (1.1 psi NPSP). The results for the main engine performance, shown by chamber pressure, fuel pump discharge pressure and fuel pump speed, show that the performance does not significantly shift with reduced tank pressure. This occurs because the inducer pressure rise is always sufficient to prevent main pump cavitation and the pressure rise through the main pump represents about 94s of the total pressure rise. There- fore, the inducer pressure rise can decrease with only a slight effect on the total head rise. The start transient with the tank pressure set to give a running NPSP of about 1.2 psi is shown in Figures 28 through 30 + The valve sequence used is the same as for the engine without a low-speed inducer which is:
