Reducing the MOV step position t o 10 degrees eliminated the oscilla- i n Figure 32 . For an engine using a chamber tapoff for supplying turbine power, decreasing the MOV step position decreases the supplied turbine power. The reduced turbine power results in a lower main pump speed and hence lower required NPSH. The reduced main pump operation also results in a lower inducer speed, an effect which, by itself, would result in reduced inducer pressure rise. However, the fuel flowrate is also reduced which lowers the inducer flow coefficient and increases the head coefficient. The net effect is that the inducer discharge pressure remains fairly constant for the2degree change in MOV step position. The NPSH supplied to the main pump is therefore constant while the required NPSH is reduced. To determine the effect of sequencing changes on the tendency of the main pump to cavitate, the MOV step duration was increased and the time of bypass valve closure relative to the MOV opening ramp was varied. Increasing the MOV step duration to 6 seconds while closing the bypass valve after 4 seconds of the step position resulted in a good start. The longer step duration resulted in increased pump speeds and required main pump NPSH but closure of the bypass valve resulted in increased inducer pressure rise due to the increased head coefficient. This was further shown on a case where the bypass closurewasdelayeduntiltheMOVrampwasinitiated. Mainpump cavitation resulted approximately 1 second prior t o the MOV opening ramp when the inducer could not supply the required main pump NPSH. The inducer pressure rise was too low because of the higher flow rate with the bypass open. To relax the requirement that the inducer must be able to operate at zero NPSP regardless of the inducer flow and speed conditions, the inducer could be located at the ta exit.
