Typical Thermosorber Installation: ECC has two commercial installations at poultry processors sponsored by the California Energy Commission (CEC). The facilities use ThermoSorberTM to heat water for their scalding and clean-in-place operations, and use the chilled output to provide supplemental cooling. Wisconsin’s demonstration site will be at a meat packing plant. Tech Demonstration #2: - Reducing Refiner Energy Usage at Pulp Mills - Fall 2009 Refiners are the largest user of electrical power in pulp and paper mills. Most paper mills over- refine pulp to ensure that quality fiber is always produced, which greatly increases energy consumption. Currently no online control of refiners is available that can fine-tune refining in real time. This is because determining pulp quality is a time consuming operation, requiring the preparation of test hand sheets that can only be tested 24 hours after the pulp has been made. This prevents rapid process adjustments that could minimize refining energy and optimize pulp quality. The InovoCell Fibre Analyzer consists of a high speed, high resolution digital camera which takes online images of pulp fibers flowing through a measuring cell at up to120 frames per second. The analyzer is equipped with its own built-in computer and software. Pulp quality data is therefore generated in real time. The demonstration will develop a detailed pulp quality versus specific energy profile throughout a mechanical pulp mill and identify how changes can be made to minimize energy consumption and improve quality. Typical paybacks for a fully implemented system are in the one to two year time frame based on energy savings alone.
