Planned demonstration scope of work: • Confirm the analyzer provides pulp quality data which correlates with data obtained by conventional testing • Use the analyzer to develop a detailed map of the mill in terms of specific energy. • Quantify the interrelationships between pulp quality and the specific energy requirements. • Use the outputs of the analyzer to provide real time refiner control. Tech Demonstration #3 - Generating Electricity with Waste Heat - Summer 2010 ElectraTherm Inc. has developed a small scale (20kW-1MW) power system that converts wasted heat from internal combustion engines, micro turbines and various industrial processes into electricity. Using an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), ElectraTherm’s power system produces fuel and emissions-free power at a price often lower than utility rates. ElectraTherm has successfully installed and operated a 35kW demonstration unit at its test facility in Carson City, NV. Employing a patented twin screw expander, ElectraTherm has reduced the cost of heat recovery power systems in the 100kW class. The expander operates at improved levels of efficiency and reliability compared to conventional turbo-type expanders, but at a 35% - 50% price advantage. An ORC uses waste heat to “boil” a chemical working fluid into a gas. While large ORC systems use fluids such as Freon, butane and propane, ElectraTherm systems utilize organic refrigerants approved by the EPA in the U.S. and the Kyoto protocol in the U.K. and Europe. ORC Waste Heat Generator Process Overview: • Surplus heat captured by the evaporator is used to “boil” the working fluid into a vapor. • Under pressure, the vapor is forced through the screw expander, turning it to spin an electric generator. • The vapor is cooled and condensed back into a liquid in the condenser. • The working fluid liquid refrigerant is pumped to higher pressure and returned to the evaporator to repeat the process. Commercialization of Emerging Technologies Many viable energy savings technologies have been developed through the support of USDOE’s ITP programs and other programs like Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) but have been slow to enter the market. CTP has a proven model for vetting and commercializing emerging technologies that includes technical and business case due-diligence and developing financing mechanisms to support the new technology, including loans, grants, equity placements and leveraging of state and local programs.
