The first precondition is surplus in quantities of wood residues. Second precondition is the existence of permanent demand for heat. Third precondition deals with economic justification and feasibility of this kind of production. 5.1. Wood residues The basic prerequisite for potential use of CHP plants in sawmills is utilization of unused heat generated in different processes, such as drying of wood. It is assumed that one-fazed process requires that all processed products should be dried out. Consumption of heat for kiln drying, according to [6] equals to 420 kWh/m3 for softwood and 700 kWh/m3 for hardwood. Calculated disposable surplus of wood residues (Figure 9) for all three cases allows for exploring the possibilities of using CHP production of energy. In calculation of generated thermal energy the following coefficients have been used: 72% for ORC 650 and 75.5% for Stirling 70. 5.2. Electricity generation Analyzed cases, according to calculations in Figure 8, have significant surplus of wood residues, which may be used for additional electricity generation. Figure 8 comprises data on how much sawmill should process logs depending on chosen technology in order to achieve rentable operation of CHP.
