A distinctive feature of the power supply matrix in LAC is its heavy reliance on hydropower (Figure 3). Overall in the region, NRETs and hydropower provide 52% of current installed capacity and generate around 59% of the region’s electricity19. Figure 3. In this context, and in order to maintain a diversified power supply while limiting its carbon emissions, the region would need to access other renewable energy resources. Fortunately,20 the non-hydro renewable energy resources of LAC are also substantial.
