1.1 The Caribbean as a Research Region Located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Central America and to the north of South America is the Caribbean Sea, which forms the Caribbean region (Figure 1). Figure 1: Caribbean Region Source: Caribbean Cruises 2010 The Caribbean region is an archipelago called the West Indies. The region can be divided into the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles or as Western and Eastern Caribbean. The Greater Antilles comprise 4 big islands; Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and Puerto Rico, whereas the Lesser Antilles consist of many small islands. In 1981 seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with one another and promote unity and solidarity among the members, therefore establishing The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). By now, OECS is comprised of the 9 member states Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis and St. Vincent. OECS is aiming to contribute to the sustainable development of its member states by supporting their strategic insertion into the global economy while maximizing the benefits accruing from their collective space (OECS 2010).
