Assessment/ Keys to Success There are many elements that make a biomass system successful. NREL has laid out the five keys to successful biomass facility and they include the following: (NREL, 2008) A good local wood source: due to wood being bulky and high in moisture, which increases cost of transportation, a close source critical to biomass being practical The right team and technology: need to choose the right technology to fit the facility it is being used for. Political will and long‐term commitment: The economics of Biomass systems can be uncertain and sometimes cost up to two to three times that of a conventional system. Understanding that it will take up to ten years for pay‐back is necessary. A high energy bill: the higher the energy bill the more feasible biomass systems become.
