11. Summary In Finland the production capacity of the CHP plants was 4128 MW electricity and 5671 heat in the year 2000. The extra potential of the CHP production in Finland is evaluated to be 941 MWe electricity and 1 670 MW heat with the peak load of 6 000 hours. With the annual 2000 hours peak load time the CHP potential would be 3 685 MWe electricity and 5 020 MWth heat. When the district heating produced with biofuels, peat, and natural gas in the year 2000 is taken as a basic case, the CHP potential produced with these fuels can be estimated to be 611 MWe electricity and 1 044 MW heat with the annual peak load time of 6 000 hours. With the peak load time of 2 000 hours, the CHP potential produced with biofuels, peat and natural gas could be 3 685 MWe electricity and 5010 MW heat. Of the potential CHP plants 91 % would be in the size range of under 20 MWth with the 6 000 hours peak load. With the 2 000 hours peak load 74 % of the potential would be under 20 MWth. If oil fuels would be replaced with biofuels in CHP production, and otherwise CHP production would be increased by using biofuels, the capacity of the CHP could be increased 30% compared to the capacity in the year 2000. If the peak load would be 6 000 hours, the CHP production could be increased 54%. With the peak load of 2 000 hours, the extra CHP capacity of 90% could be built and the production could be increased 55%. The main technology for small-scale CHP production in Finland is a rankine cycle. New technologies like gasification of biomass, stirling engines, and organic rankine cycles have not yet became technically efficient and economically feasible. In Finland there are mostly rankine cycles with the fluidised bed boiler technology used for biomass combustion in the under 20 MWe power plants. The only exceptions are the under 1 MWe CHP plants. One 0.5 MWe CHP plant is based on the biomass gasification and gas engine and two 0.9 to 1.0 MWe CHP plants are based on grate boilers and steam engines. Sweden has only a small amount of combined heat and power plants in its district heating network. In the year 2000 the contribution of the district heat coming from the CHP plants was about 10% of the total district heat production. The share of the CHP plants in the Swedish electricity production was 7% in the year 2001. Most of the under 20 MWe CHP plants connected to the district heating networks in Sweden are based on the fluidised bed technology. 75
