3.1.5 PV Reference System Descriptions Due to the modularity of PV technology, systems can be configured to provide value in a variety of market sectors. Therefore, as part of this market-based, systems-driven approach, reference systems have been defined that provide the basis for trade-off studies of different technology development pathways and their resultant impacts of system-level parameters. Some key characteristics of these reference systems are shown in Table 3.1.5-1 for the key markets identified above, as well as an off-grid market reference system. Note that reference systems are meant to describe typical systems and not necessarily price or performance leaders. Further, detailed information is provided on reference systems in Appendix A. Figure 3.1.5-1 is a graphical representation of a PV system with common terms illustrated.
