EXECUTIVE SUMMARY From the publication of the Geothermal Map of North America in 2004, the extent of thermal energy available under Texas became very evident. The state of Texas is more like the western states, than the eastern states from a resource standpoint. The high volumes of saltwater produced during hydrocarbon production became the impetus to focus on geothermal energy for electrical purposes. The previous investigations of the geopressure resource along the Gulf Coast, primarily by the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology and Louisiana State University under Department of Energy contracts showed there was geothermal resource potential. Yet, it came at a time when low hydrocarbon costs created an environment where renewable solutions were rarely considered, thus in 1994 the final report summaries (John et al. 1994) were shelved. During this new temperature assessment, oil fields were in a state of decline and geothermal power was seen as a method for keeping energy related companies in business while generating baseload renewable electrical energy for Texas. The project goal was to define geothermal resources through improved understanding of temperatures. Eastern Texas was the project focus because of the overlap between higher heat flow levels, the location of major Texas population centers, and the availability of numerous oil and gas field data. A combination of new and existing temperature data from wells were collected and analyzed. Corrections to the temperatures were compared with equilibrium well logs and production pressure temperatures. South Texas has the highest measured temperatures (>300°F) at depths of 10,000 to 12,000 feet. The Gulf Coast geopressure areas are the most accessible energy to develop because of the large fluid volumes and entrained gas. East Texas is dominated by shallow drilling (typically less than 10,000 ft) and water-flood fields. Deeper depths are estimated to have the highest natural radioactivity in the granites associated with the Sabine Uplift, and thus elevated temperatures. North Texas is currently dominated by Barnett shale drilling. Below this formation is the Ellenberger which has temperatures of approximately 200 to 250°F and water volumes in the 50,000 to 100,000 bbls/day range based on injection well capacity. An extension of this assessment was the addition of four conferences at SMU on the “Geothermal Energy Utilization Associated with Oil and Gas Development”. The conferences were an ii
