important step in developing geothermal power by focusing on combing the business structure and resource potential. All the conference presentations and related papers are posted on the SMU Geothermal Laboratory website. In addition a series of questions were created to assist new companies in starting a geothermal business and a list of companies to contact for assistance. The outcome of this geothermal assessment and outreach are projects reaching the development stage. Universal GeoPower LLC and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have a geothermal demonstration project in Liberty County, just north of Houston, which is designed to generate 250 kW using a watered-out and abandoned oil well with a Pratt & Whitney Power System PureCycle® Model 280 system. There is a second DOE demonstration site along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana in Cameron Parish, coordinated by Louisiana Geothermal LLC. Gulf Coast Green Energy through a Renewable Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) grant is deploying an ElectraTherm Green Machine in Jones County, Mississippi on a Denbury Resources Inc. well that is expected to generate 30 to 50 kW. Hilcorp Energy Company and Cleco Power LLC are developing a geothermal project in western Louisiana also using the ElectraTherm Green Machine, which is expected to be online by summer 2010. The Geo Texas Company has acquired Texas General Land Office geothermal leases for off-shore wells near Galveston, Brazoria, and Matagorda Counties. Geothermal energy is a baseload renewable resource located where the majority of Texans live. The development of the resource includes the need for multi-faceted business and geologic understanding to get projects off the ground. In a sedimentary basin, it is advantageous to work with the oil and gas industry and combine geothermal projects with hydrocarbon and waste heat production. Currently, there is momentum towards increased geothermal development in Texas as seen by the companies participating in the SMU Geothermal Conference and the number of companies installing systems throughout the state.
