Gulf Coast Geology The Gulf Coast is known for its geopressure - geothermal resources located along the coastal regions of both Texas and Louisiana. The region is approximately 100 miles (160 km) wide and 750 miles (1,200 km) long onshore and encompasses roughly an equivalent area offshore (Wallace et al., 1979; Davis et al., 1981). The pattern of geopressured formations in Texas consists of roughly concentric bands of sediment, trending parallel to the Gulf of Mexico coastline. The regional dip is Gulfward, with formations becoming progressively younger and thicker in the downdip direction. The formation of geopressure along the Gulf Coast resulted from the rapid sediment deposition at each successive position of the continental margin over the last 65 million years into the rapidly subsiding Gulf of Mexico basin.
