Companies use high accuracy temperature logs to help them understand what geologic or casing changes have occurred within a well usually because of a change in production. Measurements may be taken months to years after drilling, but not necessarily after the well has been out of production. Thus these are more similar to equilibrium logs, than the BHT value and are used as a calibration of the applied temperature correction. Six well locations data are available for comparison with the SMU-Harrison correction. Only the zone of interest is logged in these circumstances. They have been named workover temperature logs (Figures 8 and 10). These very detailed temperature logs assist in determining where gas is entering the well or if fluid is flowing up/down the casing. When gas enters a well, the expansion of the gas will cause the temperature to drop rapidly as it expands because of the pressure change. If water is flowing behind the casing or laterally, then the temperature will remain fairly constant for the distance fluid is flowing. The following examples in Figure 10 show how much temperature can change within a small depth range. The highest temperatures measured are considered closest to in-situ values and the cooler temperatures disturbed. Figure 10 (a - f).
