Rice sparked the author’s interest in turbomachinery history and led him to explore the antecedents leading to the development of turbojets. The author wishes to thank Dr. Max Bentele, jet engine pioneer, for his communications and help in directing the author to his archival information. Dr. Bentele’s excellent autobiography, Engine Revolutions, has been a valuable reference and covers several interesting details of the dawn of the jet age in which he played a pivotal role. As is the case in any historical study, the author is greatly indebted to published documents and books referenced, including the excellent book by Edward Constant entitled The Origins of the Turbojet Revolution. The author thanks ASME for permission to reproduce some of the figures and material that appeared in his three papers on early turbojet engines, and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom, for permission to use material from their 1945 publication on early gas turbine development. The author also wishes to thank Ms. Joanne Burnett of the Turbomachinery Laboratory for her dedicated work in getting this paper in a format that the reader now sees, and Erwin Gaskamp of the Advisory Committee who served as paper monitor.
