Table 1: Materials for thermal storage An open adsorption heat pump coupled to the ambience can be used as a storage system for thermal energy (Sizmann, R., 1989). In this application during desorption the storage is charged, while it is discharged in the adsorption mode. In open systems only nontoxic adsorptives can be utilized, which should preferably be available in the atmosphere. Water vapor is the most suitable gas. High storage capacities can be expected, because the adsorptive will be stored in the ambience after desorption. The storage is not self- sufficient during adsorption. The system has to be connected to the ambience in order to get back the released water vapor. This storage technique of thermal energy is called thermochemical storage. In an open sorption storage system air is transporting water vapor and heat in and out of the packed bed of solid adsorbents . In desorption mode a hot air stream enters the packed bed, desorbs the water from the adsorbent and exits the bed cooler and saturated. In adsorption mode the previously humidified, cool air enters the desorbed packed bed. The adsorbent adsorbs the water vapor and releases the heat of adsorption. The air exits warm and dry.
